I am a big fan of the Star Wars franchise, especially the original trilogy.
Sci-Fi is one of my top three movie genres and the majority of the films in that genre that get me interested seems to have a lot of cool vehicles. This is nothing much more iconic than the Millennium Falcon so I decided that there was only one thing to stretch my skills and brain and that was to do a massive flat artwork that was 1.8m by 1.2m of the Falcon.
My art typically has a lot of cross hatching with a lot of hidden icons and vignettes (that's the arty word of little scenes). So I put out on my Instagram should I do my usual or keep it all Star Wars themed and the majority came back with "just Star Wars". This was not really what I wanted to hear as it meant I would have to postpone putting pen to paper until I had some really good elements to hide inside the Falcon shape.
I put it some simple elements that I'd hand drew from memory, some I used reference for, so I traced off the movie freeze-frame on my iPad. And I could of elements I downloaded and create paint masks for.
I have to say I am so glad I did listen to the people, as this is probably one of my best pieces to date. Here is a peek at what is coming soon.
